It's 1850, and gold has been discovered in California. Jack and Mary live on a farm in Connecticut and their father has decided to sell everything and take the family West. They must first get to Missouri where they will join a wagon train and set off across the country.

As their journey begins, the family enjoys sharing adventures with their new companions and seeing unexpected sights out west. But, it's a long journey with hot days and some mysterious men on horses watching them from the cliffs.
