    About

The Second World War rages and even the tiny Devonshire hamlet of White Owl Cove hasn't escaped its effects. Kate Marsh has given up her house for the benefit of evacuees from London, and has moved in with her neighbours John Barrin (late of Scotland Yard) and his wife Jennie. Kate is soon joined by her husband, Tony, who has been invalided out of the army, after having been injured during the Plymouth blitz.

One June morning, they are visited by Inspector Smith, who suggests that Tony, Kate, and the Barrins decamp to a spa in Wellwich, run by the Inspector's sister, Mrs. Carter. But Smith is not thinking only of Tony's recuperation. For Mrs. Carter herself is desperately in need of assistance in tracking down a blackmailer who is plaguing her guests. No strangers to criminal investigation,Kate and Mr. Barrin are keen to get started. But the guests at the spa are being stalked by a foe more sinister than a mere blackmailer. For when a murderer strikes, it is clear that they are to be joined by another guest; the grim reaper - the guest with the scythe...

First published in 1942, this is a classic British murder mystery from the golden age of crime fiction.
