A collection of 500 photographs documenting the American Civil War, which raged from 1861-1865. The war was the first major conflict to be extensively photographed, and the raw images forever changed the public’s perception of war. Eradicated were romantic notions of the past, replaced by the horror of the unfolding carnage. Photography was in its infancy back then, and the trade was plied by a small group of hardy, brave men who transported their supplies in a wagon, improvised a darkroom, and learned to use chemicals in difficult conditions.
