John William Godward was an English painter in the Neo-Classicist style. A protege of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, whom he shared a passion with for Classical architecture, in particular, landscape features with marble. His primary source of inspiration was Ancient Rome. A majority of Godward’s paintings depict women in Classical dress, posed against scenes in Ancient Greece. His meticulous work required extensive study of architecture and dress in order to ensure it’s authenticity. In 1887, he exhibited at the Royal Academy. In direct opposition to his family, he moved to Italy with one of his models in 1912. His family broke off all contact with him and even cut his image from family photographs. With the arrival and increasing popularity of painters like Picasso, Godward committed suicide in 1922 at the age of 61. His alleged suicide note read, “the world was not big enough for him and a Picasso."
