    Growing the Family Tree
    By: Anthony Delgado

When the curtain begins to close in the latter years of our lives. Memories will mean companionship, fondness and laughter never again to be repeated by any individual in the same manner as a snowflake.
Our lives are filled with twist and turns, up’s and downs but we have one element in common. The ability to remember from childhood too senior our favorite memories, stories or vignettes tuck away in the recesses of our minds. A chest filled with experiences, as we fumble along the path of life in hopes of accomplishing our goals.
I the eldest of eight children was born to my father of Mexican heritage and an English mother. The union forged in England in the nineteen forties during the Second World War.
When married the young couple with little else relied on their faith in God to raise their family of eight children and endured many bumps in the road, as time marched forward. Hardships followed but the love and bond between them rose above all. The story centers on the eldest son whose cherished memories are stored in his hearts mind, sustaining him during many a tribulation from child, to adulthood to an elderly man.
Father was in the Army when he met his future wife in England. However, he was transferred back to the U.S.A. before my birth. His wife and son to follow at a later date on a converted war ship. Father remained in the service for twenty years transferring into the newly formed branch of the military the United States Air Force, becoming a cook on the base in Alamogordo, New Mexico, which he considered his calling. I recount the years as we moved to various states and even back to England in the fifties, as the family grew in number. Dad’s last duty station was George A.F.B in the Mojave Desert in southern California. This also being the first and last time he allowed us children to make the decision on where to begin our civilian lives. We siblings wanted to located close to our cousins in the Rio Grande valley in Texas. although, Mother wanted to move to Sacramento in Northern California.
Mistakes are often made in life but this turned into a gigantic monster. With many of life’s hard lessons learned by the experience. Two years henceforth we finally entered the city of Sacramento, being a place where we could plant roots and continue growing our family tree.
Photographs of the family are included.
