Nine-year-old Gracee loves music. She's learning to play the recorder at school, but it seems like no one wants to hear her play. It's hard to practice when everyone thinks it's annoying.
One evening at her Great-Grandma's house, Gracee goes outside to sit on the steps and play her recorder. A voice tells her the music is beautiful. She's sure she's imagining it until a butterfly on a nearby rosebush convinces her it's voice is real.
But the butterfly has a problem. Today is the birthday of the youngest princess in the butterfly kingdom, and there is no music for the ball. After an evil black butterfly had overthrown the kingdom he banished music --and all joyfulness-- from the kingdom. The kingdom has been reclaimed by the rightful king and is being rebuilt.
But no one remembers the songs or how to play music. So the butterfly asks Gracee to come play for the princess at the butterfly ball. There, the butterflies love her music and have her play the only song she knows, "Hot Cross Buns", over and over.
Gracee is won over by the kind butterflies in the butterfly kingdom. They promise she can return someday, and she promises to learn more songs for them.
