(1806-1864), commander of the First Corps of the Army of Tennessee, killed in Georgia during the Atlanta Campaign, on June 14, 1864 by a cannon ball passing through his chest while scouting the enemy's position. — The Funeral Address was delivered in Augusta, Ga. by his intimate friend and colleague the Right Rev. Stephen Elliott, Bishop of Georgia (37th Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America and Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the Confederate States).
