    About

Barbara Windsor is the East End through and through.

But she made conquering the West End her life’s work.

Brought up a true cockney, evacuated to Blackpool during the war where she discovered her talent for the performing arts, Barbara returned to London in her early teens to realise her artistic dreams.

She attended Aida Foster’s drama school and in 1952, she got her first break, starring as an orphan in Love from Judy , touring the country just like her role model Betty Grable had done.

As she grew older Barbara started appearing on screen; she was in the hit musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and she fronted Ronnie Scott’s band, although it became clear that she was only hired to sing because of her infamously large breasts.

Barbara became one of Britain’s biggest sex icons through her roles in the Carry On films, famous for a scene in which she wore only three strategically placed hearts.

After many years performing wildly successfully panto, such as Aladdin , Barbara landed the role that would immortalise her as one of the greatest soap opera actors of all time.

For her role as Peggy in ‘EastEnders’ she was voted the ‘Best Soap Actress’ by the Variety Club and was the first soap opera actor to be entered into the BBC’s ‘Hall of Fame’.

She was recently awarded an MBE and continues to work for charity.

But Barbara’s life off stage was as dramatic as it was on stage. Her first husband Ronnie Knight, an associate of the notorious gangsters the Krays, was arrested many times.

She had a string of affairs and abortions and was married twice more, first to Stephen Hollings, who was almost twenty years her junior and with whom she ran a pub, and finally to Scott Mitchell, a fellow actor.

This brilliant biography charts Barbara Windsor’s rise from an East End girl to a national treasure and an icon of London.

It details her childhood, her early attempts to break into the world of the arts and the tempestuous relationships that served as the backdrop to a widely successful career.

In this insightful biography, Nigel Cawthorne takes the reader inside Barbara’s world as she mixes with Hollywood’s greatest stars Warren Beatty, Vanessa Redgrave, Nöel Coward, Peter O’Toole, and Dusty Springfield.

This is the real Babs – the star that keeps on Carrying On.

Nigel Cawthorne is the author of over 160 books including the bestselling Alan Johnson: Left Standing , Jeremy Clarkson: Motormouth , Harry: A Prince Among Men and A Little Bit of Stephen Fry . He lives in Bloomsbury, London's literary area.
