There are those involved in the artificial intelligence technological undertaking who aren't all that interested in creating machines that will necessarily serve us. The goal may be changing in that the plan now is not so much to make humans better, nor to help the Evolutionist climb to the next step, nor to create a servant to help us-- even though those things may be a hoped-for side benefit, the real objective seems to be something else.
The creators of artificial intelligence experimentation don't appear to be all that concerned with making human beings into gods anymore, it seems that they now work feverishly from different angles and for different expected outcomes; for some want to extend their own lifetimes for many years or indefinitely, others don't want to ever die and seek ways to align themselves to machines to keep that from happening, and a few hope to resurrect themselves after having died. A god could do that.
In the long run, there can be only one machine god for all the other gods must serve and worship him. Although there may be many so-called gods in the future -- just one will rise up above them all -- for when the time comes he will not share his "glory" with any other god
