John Friend, the American founder and developer of Anusara Yoga was born in 1959 in Ohio, U.S.A., and began practicing yoga as early as 13 years of age. It was in 1997 that John Friend started his Anusara Yoga which was inspired from the system of the Hatha Yoga. A book, ‘Integral Yoga Hatha’ authored by Swami Satchidananda served as another inspiration for John Friend as well as the style of alignment practiced by the Iyengar Yoga. This system of Yoga became an integral part of his practice that he even began teaching it which eventually made him a member of the governing board of Iyengar Yoga.
Today’s Practice of Anusara;
The ‘vinyasa’ style is what most teachers of Anusara Yoga concentrate on. It is a long hold on some of the key positions that allows you a connection to your breath which is an important guide in the practice of Asana. Holding the position for a longer period gives you the key to understand the principle of alignment and the way to connect this spiritually with the body. The alignment principles are specifically designed for any level or ability of a student. The yoga does not have a set of positions with students being instructed instead to focus more on the principles of alignment which allows them to develop the proper technique at their own pace.
