Due to a family misfortune, Yorke Harberton sets off to South Africa to live with his English cousin who has a farm in the Dutch community there. When young Harberton’s marksmanship is challenged and he proves the victor, his life becomes in danger. Fleeing the farm, he joins the British Military and is commissioned under Lord Roberts as a scout in the campaign to Pretoria against the Boers. Through his reconnaissance expeditions, Yorke faces all kinds of adventures, mishaps and close calls.
Henty places his captivating plot in the South African War, or the Second Boer War, starting with the British advance towards Kimberley. The advance is at first arrested at Magersfontein, but with a vastly greater force, it is renewed by Lord Roberts and the push forward to Pretoria ensues, involving the relief of Kimberley and the capture of Cronje at Paardeberg.
