    About

Annie Nightingale is Britain’s first female DJ and the longest serving broadcaster on BBC Radio 1. She grew up hanging out with The Beatles and the Rolling Stones and introduced the world to bands such as The Yardbirds and The Who. Her own music journey began when she broke the no-women ban at Radio 1. She helped bring many musical icons to the forefront including The Byrds, King Crimson, Ian Dury And The Blockheads, The Police, and Daft Punk.

In WICKED SPEED she recounts her adventures and misadventures - being bugged in Moscow, drugged in Baghdad and nearly fatally mugged in Cuba. Here she tells her exuberant and unique story; from being a suburban London schoolgirl, to having a record breaking career and becoming an icon herself. WICKED SPEED is from HAMLET by William Shakespeare, a play Annie first read when she was 10 years old. She says the title represents how quickly life keeps moving on.

Annie Nightingale MBE D LITT holds The Guinness Book of Records Award for hosting the longest running radio show in the world. As well as her regular show on Radio 1, she appears on Radio 2 and on Radio 4’s The Today programme. Annie has djed at clubs and festivals all over the world, from Los Angeles to Berlin, Paris to Texas, and Warsaw to Barcelona and released two music compilations; the acclaimed ANNIE ON ONE, and Y4K PRESENTS. She fronted the iconic BBC TV show THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST during its breakthrough punk and new wave years and has made numerous documentaries for radio and TV. She has written for publications from COSMOPOLITAN to THE TIMES, while she also found time to co-run a chain of fashion boutiques. Annie is the first ever female DJ to be awarded an MBE by The Queen and was made an honorary Doctor of Letters by The University of Westminster in 2012.

WICKED SPEED is her second volume of autobiography, after CHASE THE FADE.

“She was always first onto the dance floor and last to slide under the table” Gillian Reynolds, DAILY TELEGRAPH
