I discovered a way to run motors on single phase power a number of years ago that worked so well, I finally decided to make a DVD set telling people about it. After ten years of selling the DVD's and listening to hundreds of customers from around the world, I have a pretty good idea of what works.
The rotary converter is well known, but is not so great for things like air compressors, dust collectors, pumps, fans, etc. Hard to start machines have trouble starting on the rotary. The rotary has to be running before you can start your motor. It wastes electricity, etc, etc.
The transformer converter will start heavily loaded motors with ease. It does not have to be running before you start the machine. It does not waste energy or make noise.
If you are going with all new components, it is actually cheaper to build a transformer converter over the rotary.
The rotary converter needs to have a motor 3 times the size of the motor you are going to run for something like an air compressor. A 10 horse compressor equals a rotary of 30 hp. That is a 30 hp motor sitting on the floor doing nothing. Doesn't sound efficient does it?
But I show you more good things, like how to find surplus transformers and convert them for service in the converter, and how to modify them to run motors at 380, 480, or 500 volts.
