Jake Richards was a well known and respected microbiologist and virologist.
He spent time behind enemy lines during the Gulf War as a member of an S.A.S. team identifying and destroying possible chemical weapon producing establishments. After the war he spends much of his time working abroad until his daughter contracts an ear infection. He and his wife Ellie return to England in order to get the specialist treatment their daughter needs. Following what is to be their daughters final visit to the hospital in Birmingham his wife and daughter are killed in the blast from a bomb planted by terrorists. Following the death of his wife and daughter Jake goes off the rails and lets his drinking get out of hand. Following a particularly heavy bout he is contacted by a former S.A.S. colleague, Maurice (Mo) Morris, who now works for MI5. He attempts to solicit Jake's help in solving a problem to which Jake's talents are particularly suited.
Sean Peters is a member of the I.R.A.. His involvement is known to only a handful of high ranking officers and he is totally unknown to the British authorities. He comes into possession of a highly toxic agent that he and his two veteran I.R.A members use to devastating effect in two cinemas on the U.K. mainland. Jake and Mo are given the task of tracking down both the origins of the toxic agent and the people using it. Sean Peters uses the agent to kill all the people in a huge shopping mall in The Midlands and from there Jake and Mo begin to track Peters and his colleagues back to Ireland.
.
The novel is a fictional account of what could happen if chemical or any other weapon of mass destruction got into the wrong hands.
