Arriving at the huge gates of his new kindergarten, SEAN is upset that it’s his
aunt who’s accompanying him on his first day at school and not his mum. His
mum’s pregnant and at home resting. Sean has no idea how pregnancy works,
so when his mum touches her stomach, smiles, and then tells him to expect a
very special gift in the near future, Sean is more than a little confused.
Sean’s first day at school is spent getting to know his teacher, Mr. Shaman, and his classmates, who are all wearing brightly coloured face paints. Mr. Shaman turns out to be a great storyteller, whose tales of legendary heroes stick firmly in Sean’s mind.
That evening, Sean’s mum is taken away in an ambulance by a very large and
sinister ambulance-man. Sean is convinced that the bearded ambulance-man has stolen his gift.
That night, Sean is transported to a world where he meets Shaman - a strange,
mystical kid with blue skin - who tells him that his name is no longer Sean, but
Thorn. Shaman then sends Thorn on a great adventure, across five magical and
extremely hostile lands, in an attempt to retrieve his gift. Thorn is aided on his
journey by child warriors of his own age, all of who have more than a passing
resemblance to his new kindergarten classmates. Together, they pursue
Flamebeard (the broadsword wielding evil marauder) in order to defeat him and
retrieve Thorn’s gift.
