    About

SASEs and simsubs and sell-throughs, oh my! The publishing and film industries have languages that can seem completely foreign to those who are trying to break in as writers and editors. Nothing can make you feel quite as out of place as trying to join a conversation where you can't understand half the words-- and you certainly don't want to alert publishers to your newbie status by asking what they mean when they ask you if FNASR are taken, or if you have a logline and treatment ready.

Some of the terms in this book are literary devices you probably learned long ago in school, but haven't dusted off in years (like synecdoche and trochee), some are copyediting marks (like stet), some are the abbreviations for conferences and books that you might see tossed around Twitter (like BEA and HCD), and others are words that might crop up when people critique your work or invite you to submit a piece of writing. Still others are the "just for fun" terms that writers and editors use as shorthand with each other.

Using this book as your guide, you'll be much more informed and prepared to join industry conversation, interpret what agents and editors are looking for, submit your work, and understand offers and contracts.
