A tale of love, hope, and humanity set against the backdrop of post-apocalyptic New Zealand.
"Ten years ago, a deadly plague ravaged humanity. There were seven billion souls on our planet; now, there's just a handful. Our extinction event has come and gone, but a few of us did survive. We're the lucky ones, born with a rare genetic adaptation that gave us immunity to the plague. The intervening decade has been brutal and unforgiving, and many more of us died. First came the riots, then the gangs. Bad people are running wild now, with no one to stop them.
"I wish I could say that I was the hero this world needs to stop them, but I’m not. I was eighteen years old when I watched my family die one by one, and then I spent the next decade alone, struggling to eke out an existence amongst the ruins of our shattered world. It's a miracle I'm still alive. I am a lone female in a world without rules, and death stalks me at every turn.
"It turned me hard, made me paranoid and fearful, but now I have a second chance. I've met a group that I know I can trust, a group that I would do anything to protect. I choose to fight for what's important. I can't just stand by waiting for death to claim the people that I care about, one by one. What can one person do to save a world this far gone? I’m no hero, but I can try to bring hope to the people who are left behind. I have to try. We have to try. We have to find some way to move forward, or humanity will be lost forever. Someone must take the first step, and lead the way out of the darkness.
"My name is Sandy McDermott, and I am a survivor.
"This is my story."
***UPDATE 10/11/2016***
Due to some complaints about the cliffhanger at the end of this book, I've added a sample of the second book to the end so that no one feels obligated to buy the second book if they don't want to. Obviously, I'd love it if you did, but it was never my intention to make anyone feel like they HAVE to. I just picked that scene to finish the first book because it felt like the best place for maximum drama. So, now I hope no one will feel like they're being scammed or ripped off. Enjoy! Thank you for reading!
