When an Irish priest is called to the bedside of a dying British army Colonel and given a valuable golden cross and some documents which could have explosive consequences for the newly elected Pope and an ambitious German arms magnate, things become dangerous for all concerned. With control of the company and an oil deal in Africa worth billions at stake, a hit man is hired by the industrialist to retrieve the documents.
In America, an aging mafia don, whose father crafted the cross for a German officer during the war, receives a letter from a dying old woman in Rome who gives him the names of the principle people responsible for his sister’s death during mob reprisals against suspected collaborators at the end of the war. He sets about exacting revenge against those named, or their families, and also seeks to retrieve the cross which he considers part of their heritage. Add to this a corrupt U.S. Senator, police forces on both sides of the Atlantic and the FBI hovering in the wings, and things suddenly reach crisis levels. Into this heady mix comes Detective Sergeant Scobie Tierney.
With a reputation for hard drinking, heavy gambling and serial womanising, when plunged into the centre of this dangerous international maelstrom of revenge and murder, he must prove that behind the feckless image, lies a good Irish policeman.
“They thought he was just a hick Irish policeman - fond of his drink, a pretty face and a punt on the horses. The professionals they were sending over would have little difficulty in dealing with him.
They got three out of the four right!”
