The NEATS is a child and family assessment that directs attention to five areas of human development and functioning that research has established as fundamental. These areas are neurobiology, executive function, attachment, trauma, and self-regulation. The title NEATS draws from the first letter of each of the five areas.
Children thrive when they feel safe and engage in reci-procal relationships of love and care. Safety is ensured when adults provide routines and structure, are clear in their expecta-tions, recognize and praise appropriate behaviors, explain reasons for rules, and provide guidance for alternative behaviors when children behave inappropriately.
