“Ready the fires!” the king called, as the first ball struck just yards from the king’s ship, covering the water with flaming oil. A second went straight through their main sail, shattering a boom before dropping into the sea. “Thank the kings of old, the Scurns have yet to acquire aim. Show them how it’s done!” he yelled, thrusting his arm.
Two large trebuchets, mounted upon the deck, their gears and swivels locked, sent two burning balls of fire high into the sky, arching toward the oncoming sails of black. The first dropped but a few feet from its target, sending a fiery splash upon the deck. The second ball struck hard into the stern, thrashing men, sails, decks and rails, before bursting into a hundred balls of fire. A cheer rose from the men, but was quickly hushed as a watchman pointed to the west, announcing with well-deserved panic, the approach of three more vessels bearing the dreaded sails of black.
