The Journal of Darien Dexter Duff (Louisiana 1865) is written by a twelve year old slave boy, Darien Dexter Junior. He begins writing in his journal after the bloody Civil War ends and Emancipation was declared for all slaves living in this country. Darien is a typical boy who gets in trouble with his Cousin Ernie, his sister Daneece, little brother Doofus, Auntie Sue, and her children as the large extended family treks across the bayous in search of a new place to live and work. Freedom for the first time in the family's lives is very confusing. The family takes an adventurous ride in a paddle boat down the Mississippi. to the bustling international port of New Orleans where everyone in the family finds work. Darien, Cousin Ernie, and Horace and Hector, Auntie Sue's adopted sons, have one hilarious and scary experience after another. This book is all about FAMILY and FRIENDS coping in a war torn very confusing country. Darien Dexter Duff won the Royal Palm first place prize for Middle Grade and Young Adult fiction. The Author includes an Epilogue for readers to see what happens in the future to all the characters in the book.
