This short book, THE IRS: The Student's Survival Guide, is intended to teach high school and young college students about the authority of the Internal Revenue Service. I have met students who have never heard of income taxes, and have no idea of the legal power that the IRS has to collect taxes, to enforce the tax laws, and to punish those individuals who do not pay their taxes. This book discusses payroll withholding, what situations trigger an audit, what financial information taxpayers should keep and how long they need to keep it, tax liens and tax levies, and the unprecedented power of the IRS to seize assets in satisfaction of an individual's tax obligation. This book also warns the reader of the danger of tax protesters' theories as to why no one needs to pay taxes, as well as scams to steal people's money and identities while posing as IRS agents. None of this is taught to high school or college students, and often people learn of the power of the IRS the hard way. It should not be necessary for someone to learn these important facts through bitter personal experience. That's why I wrote this book.
