In the early 1900s the art form of animation underwent an exciting transition, in the which it transformed itself from artisanal craft into profitable industry. In the quest to compete with live-action film, animators were constantly looking for new technologies that could build upon the strengths of animation while also allowing the creative process by which their masterpieces of imagination would be built to not become inhibitively expensive. To fit within the budgets imposed by Hollywood, the process of animation became more efficient. The cell system, reusable backgrounds, and cyclical animations all contributed to making animation that was both beautiful and efficient. Late in the 20th century, animation underwent a similar revolution – the development of advanced computing technologies allowed animators to relegate much of the tedious work of hand animation to computers, allowing more work to be done with fewer artists and ultimately freeing up animation to expand into new creative frontiers.
