There on the mountain that you have climbed you will die and be gathered to your people, just as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people. (Deuteronomy 32:50 )
Notice that the expression “gathered to his people” is repeated seven times. Maybe God has done this because the concept is important.
We speak about Heaven. But I believe I never have heard anyone speak of a deceased person as being gathered to his people. Have you? I think this may be because we do not understand the importance in God’s sight of the “family.”
We group people by towns and cities and states and nations. Perhaps God groups people by families.
What does it mean to be gathered to our people. Exactly who are our people? Maybe God views all of us as belonging to one family or another, whether we realize this or not.
I spent the past three and one-half months in the hospital because of a broken femur, and then accumulated illnesses. Can you guess what was on my mind? My family. While I was in the hospital I was anxious to return to my family, including to the family dog.
After being released from the hospital, we were returning home in our car. I looked around in the car and there was my family: Audrey, Marc, and David. I had such a sense of relief and pleasure! The dog was absent at this time.
While I was in the hospital I thought a lot about the idea of “family.” Who are “our people” that we are to be gathered to?
