About
Following the Reformation, the Christian Church was split in its interpretation of what the Bible taught about divorce. On the one side, continental Protestant reformers taught that the Bible permitted divorce and remarriage for adultery and desertion, among other things. On the other side, the Church of England was resolute in its stand against divorce, believing that the Scriptures taught that marriage was an indissoluble bond, and therefore divorce with the right to remarry was not permitted. Clearly, one side was in error.
