A fast paced thrill ride!
They ran in a half crouch toward the ramp leading up to the street. As they approached the guard booth, Doctor Brody pulled Eve behind a minivan and again took her by the shoulders. "Are you hurt?" He asked, "Are you shot?"Eve ran her hands over her bare stomach and the small of her back and said, "No. I don't think so.”
Doctor Brody spun her around and examined her. As he stripped off his jacket and helped Eve into it he said, "I've seen people who have been shot and hadn't known it for hours."
Bang! Bang! The man in the stairway was kicking at the door. Eve looked past the parked cars and saw a group of young women, who evidently had just gotten back from a party, hasten to help the man trapped in the stairwell. Doctor Brody took Eve by the upper arm and said, "We have to move!"
As they walked from the garage to the sidewalk Doctor Brody said, “Walk, don’t run.”
Eve’s breath was coming in ragged gasps. She nodded and slipped her arm through his. "Calm down, Eve." she thought, "It’s just like acting a part. Calm down and breathe." They took a left out of the garage and walked north up the sidewalk. They hadn’t gone ten paces when two men came from around the corner of the building. The men were alert. Their eyes met. Eve stiffened. Doctor Brody steered Eve across the street. She stopped at the screeching of car tires. Doctor Brody hissed in her ear, “Move!”
He pulled her along. Her feet weren’t obeying her commands and scraped along the ground as if she were drunk. Doctor Brody whispered and pointed, “There!”
Eve looked up at the yawning entrance to the subway. Christmas time revelers and late night shoppers returning with their gifts walked in and out of the hole leading down.
