Herman Webster Mudgett (1861-1896) was the first serial killer in the United States. The majority of his murders, estimated at nearly 200, were committed in Chicago, Illinois in 1893, during the World's Colombian Exposition. Mudgett's roots are in New England, primarily in Belknap County, New Hampshire. His ancestors came first to Massachusetts from Essex and Norfolk in England. My book is a succinct yet extensive look at Mudgett's family, beginning in the 17th century. There is also a bit about the crimes he committed as Dr. H.H. Holmes. I have added some details concerning the genealogy of Mudgett's wives, his son and daughter, and one of his criminal accomplices.
