A Tale of Two Cities is one of the most famous works written by Charles Dickens. With the French Revolution in 1789 as the background, he portrays three different and striking characters in this novel. The first is the cruel aristocrats, to Marquis St. Evremonde brothers as the representatives. They look upon human lives as if they were grass. The second is the idealized positive characters, including Doctor Manette, Lucie Manette, Charles Darnay and Sydney who are kind-hearted, brave and tolerant. The third is the stealthy, bloodthirsty vengefulness of revolutionary masses, including Madame Defarge. According to the analysis of the three types of characters in this article, it shows that the tendency of the revolution is uncontrollable and Dickens encourages humanity to solve the class contradiction, instead of crazy violent revolution. Also he expresses some expectation for human being in that special time.
