The Liar, by Nora Roberts, is a mystery romance set against the backdrop of Tennessee's fog-gy Smoky Mountains. Shelby Anne Pomeroy Foxworth, a naive, red-headed-country girl, born and brought up in the holler, learns just how strong she is when her presumed wealthy hus-band, Richard Foxworth, dies abruptly, plunging her deep into widowhood, debt, social undo-ing, and a series of jarring events, that follow her back to her childhood home.
A midst this unrest, the novel treats the reader to vignettes of country living where a small-town beauty shop bids locals “cut their teeth” on the fodder of daily news; a humble bar (where everybody doesn't just know your name, but also what you've done and why) “serves up” real-time rivalries; and the heroine's supportive family (that resemble anyone in small-town America) provides a buffer for the strange events which begin to surround Shelby. Be-yond the silhouette of the mysterious mountains, a smoldering romance awaits, just below the heroine's fiery red hair.
The novel opens on a quasi shock-grief scene with the protagonist searching for answers to who she may have married and fathered her active 3 year-old baby girl, Callie, with. Shelby is on a journey home to her family and her beloved mountains. But in her pilgrimage to uncover her life of charade, more mystery than mountainous peaks await. The heroine is met with “cliff-hanging” entanglements (pun intended) that shift the reader from Shelby's recent mar-riage drama and widowhood untruths, to out-naught cold murder, and then back to seemingly bizarre and random events which continue to follow her, even to her mountainous peaks. Strategically, the author shifts the reader back and forth from romance to mystery, deploying this uncertainty so generously, one is kept off balance and (yes) turning pages. The Liar is a “web,” if you will, of romance to mystery, and back again – that tangles rather than untangles as it goes.
