In the first of these two episodes, our space maverick and former Federation officer Dane Corey continues to deal with a disloyal crew. While Smith comes up with a plan to get rid of Sadira, Captain Corey is arrested for Benjamin Baden's murder. The reader also gets to meet Barney Stiles, who formerly served under Dane Corey at the Battle of Thos and is the winner of a silver star but, who may in fact be an incompetent officer. It will be from Stiles that Opus learns about Dane's court-martial. Meanwhile, there is an unexplained attempted murder of one of the crew and the ship inexplicably has a missing torpedo from her banks.
In the second episode we meet Federation Commander Curtis Armstrong, temporarily breveted to the the rank of Star Fleet captain of a squadron of "C" class cruisers. He served as second officer to Captain Benjamin Baden in episode 1 and is seeking to make his temporary rank permanent. Wondering if the arrest of Captain Corey might accomplish that, he plays back the court martial of Captain Corey and the surprise promotion of Admiral Riker. Meanwhile, the Orion Queen has been surrounded by police, boarded, and a full bank of photon torpedoes found.
Again, the "dime novel" format continues in which a lot happens in very few pages and in which each episode tells a complete tale while giving the reader the necessary background for the next episode. Dime novels were originally written to the following specifications:
They must be written in good taste, not offensive, moral (regardless of age), be the author's best work, of unquestioned originality, with pronounced strength of plot and high dramatic interest of story, correct grammar, and knowledgeably written,
