    SOLD INTO SLAVERY
When the great Hebrew chieftain Jacob (grandson of Abraham) gives his favorite son Joseph a beautiful coat, his ten older brothers are filled with jealousy. Even worse, he tells them one day they will bow down before him. The brothers have heard enough! They come up with a wicked plan and sell him into slavery, telling their father that Joseph is dead. Joseph is sold to Potifar, a high-ranking officer in the court of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. But trouble awaits Joseph in Potifar’s house when Potifar’s wife tries to seduce him. Embarrassed by his refusal, she falsely accuses him and he is thrown in prison where he earns a reputation for interpreting dreams. Years later, Pharaoh has two troublesome dreams that even the best magicians in Egypt cannot understand. He summons Joseph to explain. With God’s help, Joseph tells Pharaoh the meaning of his dreams — great famine will strike Egypt after seven years. Impressed with Joseph’s wisdom, Pharaoh makes Joseph the governor of Egypt and he prepares for the famine. Eventually the famine reaches Canaan and Joseph’s brothers travel to Egypt to buy food. Joseph recognizes his ten brothers but decides to keep his identity a secret. Instead he puts their character to the test. When Judah offers his own life in exchange for Benjamin, Joseph finally reveals himself to them. Never in their wildest dreams could the brothers have imagined that their younger brother would become the powerful governor of Egypt! Joseph persuades his brothers to return to Egypt with Jacob and start a new life in the land of Goshen.

"A long time ago in the land of Canaan, there lived a great Hebrew chieftain named Jacob who had four wives and many sons. Of all his sons, Jacob loved young Joseph the most. As Joseph grew older, his brothers saw how their father loved their younger brother more than he loved them. To make matters worse, Joseph often told his father about his brothers’ bad behavior. They weren’t nice to Joseph, their neighbors, or to each other.

The firstborn son Rueben behaved so badly that Jacob took away his special blessing called a birthright, and gave it to Joseph. “When I die, Joseph will rule this family,” declared Jacob. He gave him a beautiful coat of honor to show everyone how much he loved his younger son. Joseph was proud of his beautiful coat. He wore it everywhere he went. But when the brothers saw what their father had done, they became more jealous of Joseph and wanted him gone!"
