The battle of the Somme is a month old and both sides are locked in a death struggle as the British Army presses forward, battering against the strong German defences in a vicious battle of attrition. Through that murderous summer the world awaits the outcome of the desperate fight, the fate of empires hanging in the balance and resting on the courage of the ordinary men asked to fight.
Harry and his battalion are pushed into the battle, the young soldiers forced to face the true horror of war and the reality of industrialised death. Despite the carnage Harry and his friends struggle on, their loyalty to each other unbroken as they strive together against the enemy.
The Death of Battle.
The Somme, 1916.
As winter threatens to fall across Northern France the British make one last great effort to gain ground before the battle that has raged for five long months is brought to a halt.
For the exhausted men at the front, after weeks of vicious fighting, the rain and cold appears to have finally brought an end to the carnage on the Somme. However, there is to be one more battle, one final all out effort to break the faltering German Army before it is saved by the onset of winter.
For Harry and his section the battle will be a vicious horror of constant attacks, against an enemy determined to fight for every scrap of ground. Faced with the brutal reality of modern war the men are pushed to the limits of their endurance as the last great struggle of the Somme offensive grinds to a bitter end.
The Storm at Vimy Ridge.
1917.
Threatening the British flank, Vimy Ridge stands like a rock above the Douai plain. The enemy has held it since the first months of the war and have turned it into a fortress.
Temporarily attached to a company of engineers tasked with seizing the tunnels that lie hidden beneath Vimy Ridge, Harry and his section will find themselves caught in the grip of the storm as they battle their way onto the ridge and below it.
