Sailors have ever been renowned for telling yarns of shipboard life and, although the advent of television and other similar diversions has to a large extent succeeded in strangling the old tradition, there are still a few of the old school about who enjoy the printed word rather than the ephemeral intermittent flashing of visual pictures, largely forgotten after being switched off.
