Eleven-year-old Jess is moving house and, for the first time, she will have a proper bedroom of her own – a bedroom which is the best in the house, high up in the attic overlooking the whole city of Winster. She should be thrilled but she’s not; she’s terrified because, when she and her parents first viewed the house, Jess saw a ghostly face by the door to the attic. It seems that her new room is haunted.
Knowing that her parents won’t believe her, Jess has no choice but to sleep in her room and she soon discovers more about its strangeness – a huge owl flies past the window in broad daylight; a scary black shadow crosses the skylight in the night; the girl who used to sleep there inexplicably disappeared one night, even though the room is five floors up.
Jess is forced to turn detective and dig deep to the root of the mystery. It becomes her destiny to save the children of Winster from the evil Shadowbird. How can she and her new friends, Lauren and Rob, ever hope to defeat the prehistoric magic that has become entangled in their twenty-first century world?
