A Jewish family struggles to survive in Dresden, Germany, as their comfortable life is destroyed by the strengthening Nazi regime. In the period between April 1936 through November 1939, the family loses their home and possessions, witnesses the horrors of Kristallnacht and the father’s internment at Buchenwald concentration camp. Their five-year-old son is stricken with scarlet fever and would have died if not for his courageous mother’s determined care and the comfort of his constant companion, a beloved teddy bear, Robbie. After paying the Gestapo for her husband’s release from prison, Mama, Papa, six-year-old Peter and his bear Robbie escape into Holland and finally set sail for America.
