Tsunami: Rising Above the Wave details the story of my experience on December 26th, 2004 at Phi Phi Don Island, Thailand. The story chronicles our terrifying experience and ongoing healing process over a three year period.
Our survival on “Black Sunday” is overshadowed by my inability to save those struggling in the sea. Hearing them calling for help and watching them die haunts me to this day.
My wife and I were on the beach when suddenly we saw in the distance a white foam line on the horizon. Unable to outrun the wave we stood and bear hugged until we were buried beneath the wave. We were swept under water, across the island, and out to sea where we were rescued by a Thai fisherman. My wife was unconscious after the first wave and barely survived. It’s estimated that approximately 3,000 people on vacation perished on the beach where we were.
