Rebels tells the dramatic story of the uprising of Easter 1916, a key date for the Irish Repulicanism.
The UK was at war with Germany. The Irish took this as an opportunity to garner support from the Germans and stage a rising before the conflict ended.
Planning of this uprising fell to Tom Clarke and Sean McDermott. Clarke, a naturalised American, was the owner of a tobacconist and newsagent. Sean McDermott, a cheery over thirty year old, was Clarke’s best friend. Both were executive members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB).
They set up their headquarters at the GPO, forming a base for their growing number of supporters. Joining forces with James Connolly, from the Irish Citizens Army, the plans were set, they were to commence the rising the following Easter Sunday … St George’s Day for the English. It was to be a resurrection …
Roger Casement, residing in the US at the time the war was declared, suggested the formation of a Brigade from Irish Prisoners … in Germany. His proposal was accepted and he soon found himself in Germany. There, he was under pressure to fulfill his proposal … a difficult feat considering the circumstances that arose following his arrival.
Unfortunately, the British had intercepted many of the communications exchanged between Ireland and Casement in Germany. They knew of the arms shipment and Casement’s plans to return to Ireland. What else did they know?
