In 1930s society, both Jenny and Midge face a struggle for acceptance. Jenny is trying to enter the male-dominated legal profession, while a childhood attack of polio has left Midge disabled. When Jenny’s barrister father is arrested for murder, she immediately turns to Midge to help her. It seems unbelievable that a well-known K.C. could have killed a shady solicitor or extorted money from refugees, so Midge goes undercover in a desperate attempt to identify the real killer. She succeeds, but then has to convince a sceptical Old Bailey courtroom that a disabled young woman could have discovered the truth.
