Port of Rotterdam
Is the largest port in Europe and the sixth biggest port by annual cargo throughput worldwide. The port handled 440 million tons of cargo in 2012 and 13.6 million TEU in 2013. Between 1962 and 2004, it was the world’s busiest port. It stretches along a mere 42 kilometres and the total port, including the industrial areas, covers approximately 12.425 hectares. The port has a deep sea port that receives ships till a draught of 22.5 meters. With a draught up till 17.4 meters, ships will have to use the Eurogeul and Maasgeul fairways.
The large container terminals of ECT and APM-Maersk are located at the deep sea port of the Maasvlakte and Maasvlakte 2, close to the North Sea. The Maasvlakte, besides being a container terminal port, hosts large industrial areas for coal, ore and oil and other bulk cargo. The bulk ore and coal will be mainly transported by rail further inland to Germany, Italy and other countries. The extension of Maasvlakte 2 added a 1000 hectares of industrial land, located directly at the deep water. On average, nearly 35.000 ocean-going vessels and 35.000 inland vessels visit the port annually.
The port offers direct and fast connections to inland transport over water, rail and road.
