    About

Make a logo with 3D text. Turn a 2D gradient into a 3D waving flags. Explore the inner workings of the default leather material and create a skeuomorphic leather ribbon with raised stitching.

We love logos—and we know many of you do too: company logos, brand logos, product logos, personal logos; logos are everywhere and 3D can be a big part of creating a distinctive, visually exciting identity. More often than not, a great logo includes the name of the company, brand or product and what better way to make the name stand out than 3D text. In "Make a "Peace Logo" With 3D Text", we guide you step by step through the creation of a 3D logo made from the word “peace”. You will find out how to extrude text, apply materials, arrange the letters into a pleasing configuration, set up lights and render the final image.

Extruding 2D text is just one of the many ways to create 3D objects. In "Create an Object from a Grayscale Image", you will learn about a powerful way to create a 3D mesh from a depth map, which is simply a grayscale image. After reviewing the concepts you get to put this technique to work in "Make a 3D Flag", creating a rectangular gradient image and turning that into a flag waving in the wind.

In the last issue, we learned how the preset cotton and denim materials were created. This time around, we look at another cloth-like material. In "Exploring the Leather Material Preset", you will find out how bump and diffuse texture maps are combined along with filters to create leather’s characteristic random bumpiness.

If you’re a fan of skeuomorphism (or your boss or client is), you will get to see skeuomorphic design in action in "Make a Leather Ribbon". Using the preset leather material as a base, you will see how to create realistic looking leather ribbons and tabs, complete with raised stitching.
