Wouldn't you hate to have to sew all these little squares together to make this hat? That's what I thought too. It's called Entrelac Crochet, and the squares are made as you crochet. There's no stitching together. This definitely is NOT a beginner pattern. I would call it intermediate to advanced skill level. There are pictures to help explain the pattern. Once you understand the Entrelac concept, you can make many items with this technique.
Electronic media sometimes makes it difficult to publish the pictures in line with the text in a pattern. You may have to scroll down (or across, depending on how your device flows) to find the pictures to describe the techniques. They are there, however, and take you step by step through the process. Read through your pattern once from start to finish to familiarize yourself with the technique and then you're off and crocheting. I hope you enjoy your pattern.
