Compelling Police Procedural You Can't Put Down
"Night of the Black Bastards is a winner. Rough, real, challenging...and ultimately redemptive, this novel gives an unflinching look inside the rancid, raunchy, frightening underworld of South African organized crime as fought by the South African Police Force. I love that Christie doesn't shy away from any of the brutality of the city and surrounding area, or of the complex race situation, or corruption and confusion of the characters, and I couldn't put this down.
Holding it all together are the true blue characters, and Sergeant Mike Night is made real in every way. And we need heroes, because the villain is truly horrific--ruling with voodoo, fear and truly inhumane depravity. I'm serious, add to this the gangland activity and this book gives you the real deal like you haven't experienced before.
The writing is excellent, with language that is visceral and cutting and authentic to both the vernacular of SA and the vocabularies of law enforcement. The plotting is rapid-fire, cinematic and harrowing. If you are drawn to action and tension and want real procedural-driven crime storytelling that pushes the envelope, Night of the Black Bastards delivers."
