Peggy Knight met Maybelle Carter playing bingo in 1967, and her life revolved around the Carter and Cash families for the next three decades.
She served as confidante, cook, companion, and caretaker; in the process, Maybelle, June Carter Cash, and Johnny Cash became her closest friends.
Peggy gives a remarkable glimpse of life with the Carters and Cashes that few outsiders saw. You’ll find out what Johnny and June were really like at home, off¬stage, and behind the scenes. She was like a sister to June, and she saw it all: family, friends, and favorite fans; life on the road and on vacation; a typical day at home; June’s last days and Johnny’s final illness.
Peggy paints a picture of the real Johnny and June as good country people with values rooted in undying devotion to their family and overwhelming generosity to anyone in need.
A natural storyteller who never met a stranger, Knight shares her memories, both funny and poignant, of two of the most celebrated families in country music. My Friends John, June and Maybelle is written from the heart of a down-to-earth woman who devoted her adult life to her good friends: Maybelle, June, and Johnny.
Peggy Knight is a native Nashvillian, the eighth of twelve children. She left high school at sixteen to help her divorced mother support the family. She picked vegetables, babysat, sold concessions at a baseball park, and helped out elderly friends. This willingness to help led her to spend more than three decades with the Carter and Cash families as a companion, caretaker, and friend.
“A loving and honest book written from a loving and honest heart. Here are John and June as I remember them, generous, funny, and invariably kind. And here is Peggy Knight as I know her to be: loyal to her ‘Cash babies’ now and always.” —Linda Lael Miller, New York Times Bestselling Author
“Only Peggy Knight could write this. Peggy was more than a worker for Johnny and June — she was a true friend. What would they have done without her? Every Cash and Carter fan in the world should buy two books, one for themselves and one to give to a friend!” — Dennis Devine, Johnny and June’s number-one fan
“In this book, you will see the real Mother Maybelle, the real June Carter, and the real Johnny Cash. Peggy Knight’s book reveals over and over the warmth, the caring spirit, and the utmost generosity of these three, as well as the down-to-earth lovable people whose fame never superseded these wonderful attributes.”
— From the foreword by Jo Walker-Meador, Country Music Hall of Fame member and former executive director for the Country Music Association
