George Eliot, pseudonym of Mary Ann or Marian Evans, (1819-80) was an English novelist and a notable 19th-century writer. She challenged convention to live with her mentor, G.H. Lewes. Writing about country life, Eliot was mainly concerned with people's moral choices and their accountability for their own lives. Her novels include Adam Bede (1859), The Mill on the Floss (1860), and Silas Marner (1861). Middlemarch (1871) is considered her masterpiece.
