E.M. (Edward Morgan) Forster (1879–1970) was an English novelist and essayist. With sensitivity, subtleness, and a flawless style, he brought new depths to the English novel of manners. Where Angels Fear to Tread (1905) was followed by The Longest Journey (1907), A Room with a View (1908), Howards End (1910), and Maurice (1913–14, published 1971). His final novel, A Passage to India (1924), is his best-known work. He additionally published short stories and nonfiction, including Aspects of the Novel (1927).
