D.H. (David Herbert), Lawrence (1885–1930) was an English author. Maintaining that industrial civilization dehumanizes, he exalted union with nature and its corollary, sexual satisfaction. His notable novels are Sons and Lovers (1913), The Rainbow (1915), and Women in Love (1921). After World War I, Lawrence wrote about the concept of a superhuman leader for humanity. The novels of this period, e.g., The Plumed Serpent (1926), are considered disappointments. His provocative and sexually explicit Lady Chatterley's Lover (1928) was long banned. Lawrence wrote in a sensuous, lyrical style, skillfully conveying the specific, and significantly influenced 20th-century fiction. His works include poetry, short stories, essays, plays, travel books, and criticism.
