What exactly is going on at Overstrand IVF Clinic in remotest Norfolk? And what do you do if you’re the only one that knows the truth?
When English teacher Pete Phelps is informed of his brother Tom's suicide, the facts just don't add up: Tom is supposed to have thrown himself from the top of a multi-storey car park, yet he had a pathological fear of heights. Added to which he’s the second doctor from Overstrand Clinic to have died recently in suspicious circumstances. Sensing a conspiracy and a cover-up, Pete sets out to investigate, aided by an old flame, Ann-Marie, for whom he still holds a candle of his own.
But are they on the right track? Or could Tom's death have been a targeted assassination by the shadowy anti-IVF group CAGE -- Christians Against Genetic Engineering -- and its ineptly sinister leader Domingo? And what about the even murkier group calling itself DAGR, Direct Action on Genetic Research, so secretive that it may not even exist?
There are other questions too: like why does the town of Cromer have its own lookalike agency and why are the local papers so full of stories about high-achieving kids?
Ultimately there's only one way to find out. Pete must penetrate to the heart of Overstrand and confront its mysterious sponsor, the reclusive American billionaire and one-time friend of Howard Hughes, Hayden Furst III. But can he do so without risking either his own life or Anne-Marie's? And what will happen when Overstrand's shocking secret gets out?
