Watching my own children growing up has made me realise the value of the outdoors. Whilst they get stir crazy in the house, outside they become self-sufficient little detectives. They learn to think for themselves, gaining common sense through hands on experience, and coming up with solutions to their own problems. (Plus - I have no doubt fresh air helps them sleep well!!)
This book is about engaging children in the outdoors, learning how to learn from nature’s patterns, encouraging them to take time to observe, giving them different projects to do - both indoors and out - based on these patterns. It is about opening their minds to learning lessons from tasks and applying them to create their own projects.
This book explores a number of key patterns that are commonly seen in nature, and copied by people to create solutions to our needs. Each pattern has projects and exercises to help children from 6 to 13 years old better understand them and inspire them to search out further patterns and applications.
Many of the projects involve the whole family in going outdoors and observing the world around them. The projects range from growing your own food to creating art to go on your walls.
This is a great introduction to permaculture for children and complements forest schools.
