IT’S JUST A CHICKEN
INTRODUCTION
What do you mean it’s just a Chicken? I am a life form and should be afforded the respect that goes with all life forms. OK so man is considered the dominant species but that does not give you the right to treat us or any other life form badly. It’s just a chicken is a phrase that is not acceptable.
We never asked to be hatched and we certainly never asked to be treated with such contempt. Without us chickens your species would not have eggs for breakfast or any other time for that matter. You would not have many of your fast food takeaways, Christmas dinners and many other delights that my species gives you. We are talking serious quantities here that make a great deal of money for many so called dominant species. The vast majority have no idea what we chickens go through in the normal life cycle. I say normal but in fact it is far from that.
I am an inquisitive chicken and though I say so myself I am far more intelligent than most of my fellow birds. From the day I was hatched I listened and learned. Most of what I learned I found very disturbing and not at all what is portrayed by those that are supposed to be watching over us. I am going to tell you the story of not just my life but the lives of my fellow birds that I have been privileged to share with them. Short though it may have been for some. Sometimes good and sometimes bad but hardly ever times that we were able to choose for ourselves. As well as my life this story contains some shocking revelations not just about deceit and contempt within the poultry fraternity but also within your human fraternity. It gives a whole new meaning to the words authority and welfare.
There are many stages to the life of a chicken and also many directions that they may take. Again I would say that these are not directions we were or are able to choose for ourselves. The dominant species chose for us. With these decisions comes responsibility. We are in your care and should be able to trust that you will look after us for the duration of our lives.
Before I start the story I would just like to say that before you domesticated us we were quite happy in our natural environment. We were to some extent in control of our destiny. OK so you would still hunt us down to satisfy your appetite and steal our eggs also but we were quite capable of surviving in the wild as do our cousins the Pheasant to this day.
This book and its contents is an account of my life and is not representative of all Hatcheries, Pullet Rearer, Producers and other factions of the poultry fraternity. It is however an account based on my personal experiences that were at the time factual. It also contains incidents that occurred with your own species where others inflicted pain and harm on each other showing that not only do many of you not care for the welfare of animals but you also do not care for each other. You are driven by greed and do not deserve us chickens considering what we do for you.
Read on and get your act together.
