A note from the author:
I wrote 'I Take This Woman' whilst staying a brothel in Thailand, which was not half as unpleasant as you might think. The women there were family people, often had children with them and were kind and caring. It didn't feel dangerous or sleazy, but kind and nurturing for the many older men who visited.
However, the sex trade in Thailand hides desperation. Many girls come from complete poverty, supporting their whole families by sleeping with Western men. When asked about career choices, many Thai girls from the country side say, 'Marrying a western man'.
The sex trade is also linked with sex trafficking, and there are many girls who are literally slaves, living in windowless rooms and kept prisoner until they have outgrown their use.
This sex trafficking fiction is great for book clubs as there is lots of opportunity for discussion and moral debate.
